Hui Aloha Aina Momona offers two pathways for learning: the Haloa Challenge and the Kahaluu community kui nights.

The Haloa Challenge is a 90-day course that introduces students to the cultural legacy of Haloanakalaukapalili and the history of kalo production and use. Provided papa and pohaku, students are then taught the fundamentals of kuiai – the basic strokes, identification of varieties and their uses, and the importance of cleanliness in preventing cross contamination. Finally, students are offered the opportunity to invest in a papa and pohaku.

Kahaluu community kui nights take place every week. Participants hone their craft while also preparing the coming week’s ai. While all participants are welcome, community kui nights are less about introductory instruction than they are a space for observation, mele, and talk story.
